Chronic Back Pain FAQs

What is chronic back pain?

Back pain is a common condition that is estimated to effect 1 in 6 people in the UK. It can be felt anywhere along the spine, from the neck down to the hips.

What are the causes of chronic back pain?

Back pain cannot always be traced back to a cause, but causes can include:

  • Sciatica
  • Spondylosis
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Slipped (Prolapsed) Disc
  • Scoliosis
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle or Nerve injury

Is there a cure for chronic back pain?

There are a variety of treatments available to help support you and your back pain in the long term. However, back pain alongside other symptoms (such as loss of bladder control, unintentional weight loss, chest pain or numbness) can be a sign of something serious and it is advised that you seek medical advice.

Take a look at an example care plan below:

back pain patient

Louise, 32 years old

  • Occupation: Full time office manager.

  • Condition: Diagnosed with chronic back pain 3 years ago.

  • Goal: To take less days off work or leaving work early due to chronic back pain. When painful it can be difficult to spend long periods of time at her desk.

back pain treatment movement

MOVEMENT: Louise looked at stretches and exercises she could do during the day at work to help her manage her pain better. Louise has been worried about moving when in pain, and the physiotherapist helped her pace her daily activities to ensure she could continue her day when in pain.

back pain treatment medication

MEDICATION: Louise received a full medication review and was able to reduce some of the medications that she was no longer requiring. Louise discussed the option of trying new medications for her back pain flare-ups (e.g. topical gels or Medical Cannabis) with her consultant doctor and nurse.

back pain treatment mind

MIND: Clinical Psychologist sessions where Louise discussed the impact the back pain was having on her life, and the anxiety she was facing at work from having regular flare-ups. They covered techniques for Louise to cope with the pain she is experiencing in her day-to-day life.

Outcome:

After 3 months, Louise was able to better manage her pain and was experiencing a better quality of life. She no longer needed to leave work early from pain as she was better able to pace herself during the day. She was less anxious about the fear of a flare-up and was better able to concentrate due to less medications making her drowsy.

Louise was pleased that she was finally feeling well enough to cycle to and from work again. Her clinical team keep in regular contact and check in on a monthly basis to provide continued support. Louise also keeps up a daily habit of mindfulness exercises through Leva Clinic’s pain management programme.
