Paul, 46 years old

  • Condition: Diagnosed with chronic knee pain 4 years ago.

  • Goal: To be able to be on his feet for longer during the workday before he gets into too much pain.

back pain treatment movement

MOVEMENT: Paul was hoping to lose weight to help with the knee pain he was experiencing. The physiotherapist helped Paul to work through his fears around movement, as Paul was worried it would cause a flare-up by moving too much. The physiotherapist also gave Paul gentle exercises that he could incorporate into his daily routine.

back pain treatment medication

MEDICATION: Paul was hoping to take less opioids (due to side effects) and went through a medication review with his nurse specialist. The nurse helped him to tweak his medicines to a more optimal dosage, and he looked at decreasing his over-the-counter medication use too with his nurse.

back pain treatment mind

MIND: Clinical Psychologist sessions where Paul discussed the impact the knee pain was having on his life, and the anxiety he was facing at work from having regular flare-ups. They covered techniques for Paul to cope with the pain he is experiencing in his day-to-day life.

Outcome:

After 3 months, Paul was experiencing a better quality of life and feeling more able to complete his daily activities alongside his pain. He had lost 5kg and was seeing the impact his new daily exercise habit was having on his general wellbeing and knee pain. He was feeling more confident at work and less worried about flare-ups or medication side effects impacting his ability to work. Paul also keeps up a daily habit of mindfulness exercises through Leva Clinic’s pain management programme.
