Fibromyalgia FAQs

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of widespread pain and fatigue. The condition has been documented in medical literature since the 1800’s, when physicians wrote about a condition that leads to pain, fatigue and disturbed sleep. It is estimated 1 in 20 people in the UK live with fibromyalgia.

What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?

As well as widespread pain, patients with fibromyalgia may also have:

  • Increased sensitivity to pain
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Problems with mental processes (sometimes called "brain fog")
  • Headaches
  • Stomach pain

Is there a cure for fibromyalgia?

There is no specific test for fibromyalgia, which can make it difficult to diagnose. However, symptoms can be managed with the appropriate care.

Becky, 35 years old

  • Occupation: Part time waitress

  • Condition: Diagnosed with fibromyalgia 3 years ago

  • Goal: To have better quality sleep, as she tends to have a lot of pain towards the end of the day

fibromyalgia treatment movement

MOVEMENT: Becky’s physiotherapist helped her to set activity goals in line with her symptoms. She listened to Becky’s concerns and and they discussed strengthening exercises to help with her muscle stiffness.

firbromyalgia treatment medication

MEDICATION: Becky had a full medication review for her Fibromyalgia and was able to reduce her night-time opioids with a Leva Clinic nurse supporting her through the process.

fibromyalgia treatment mind

MIND: Sessions which included Becky talking about her sleep difficulties. They talked through the sleep-pain cycle, relaxation and mindfulness exercises to help sleep better when in pain.

Outcome:

After 3 months Becky was able to better manage her pain from fibromyalgia. She was feeling more rested and getting better quality of sleep regularly. Becky decreased her opioids usage with the support of the nurses and clinical psychologist team. She was able to start getting back to activities she enjoyed such as walking to work and cooking more meals herself.

She now receives monthly check in calls from her nurse, and contacts the clinic if she needs support during a flare-up. Becky also practises daily meditation using the pain management programme, which she finds beneficial.
