In a first of its kind, NHSx has funded a CQC registered online pain management service, in a drive to help support an ever-increasing demand for pain management services.

We are thrilled to announce Leva Clinic has won a grant as part of the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Adoption Fund with South East London CCG, Guys and St Thomas Hospital London and getUBetter. As part of the project, Leva Clinic will be delivering our digital pain management programme to South East London patients, improving access to pain services for patients in the region. There were 49 winners across all pathways in the Adoption Fund, with 14 winners within MSK. This is the first time a CQC regulated online pain management service will be made available on this scale in the UK.

This project seeks to transform the way local patients access the care and treatment they need for common Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions across Southwark and Lambeth population. The aim is to provide a personalised, end-to-end, ‘digital first’ pathway that is freely available via prescription or self-referral. The adoption fund has awarded over £9.9m since September 2021 to support ICSs who have an active interest in scaling digital innovation.

Lawrence Tallon, Deputy Chief Executive at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust has said “We are grateful to NHSx and South East London CCG for the opportunity to be a part of MSK Adoption Fund 1.5. We are delighted to partner with the likes of Leva Clinic (a CQC registered service) to deliver innovative pathways for patients living with chronic pain.”

The project aims to provide a whole system digital pathway for pain management through harnessing the full “waiting period” potential with immediate access to the first phase of supported lifestyle intervention, build on local knowledge of the demand and gaps in chronic pain service provision, provide supported management as part of the digitally enabled pathway and add to the acceptability and effectiveness evidence base while collecting data to understand the barriers and challenges in the local population to reduce inequity in access to care for a diverse population.

Rashida Pickford, Guy’s and St Thomas’ added “Guy’s and St Thomas’s MSK team are very excited to offer the opportunity for all our Lambeth and Southwark patients to have free access to the Leva Clinic digital pain management clinic. We have partnered with the Leva Clinic and getUBetter to empower and support patients with persistent pain to manage and live well with pain and achieve goals that matter most to them. We are committed to ensure all patients have access to the right information and care they need first time.”

The announcement comes shortly after Leva Clinic was selected as part of Department of International Trade’s #Beyond100 digital health companies. We thank the South East London ICS, especially Tarlochan Boparai, for their brilliant work in launching this project. We look forward to sharing our case studies and participating in the NHSx adoption fund learning sessions.
