BBC-Reported UK Cannabis Cancer Pain Study
Emerging research supports the idea that medical cannabis can help with cancer pain in real-world settings. A study reported by BBC News found that in 358 adults with cancer, medicinal cannabis helped reduce pain and cut down the number of drugs patients were taking, especially when THC and CBD were balanced in the cancer pain medical cannabis treatment in the UK. Researchers described it as a safe and effective complementary option alongside other pain medications.

What Causes Cancer Pain?
Tumour pressure: As cancer grows, it can press on nerves, organs, or bones, creating constant or sharp pain that worsens with movement or changes in position.
Nerve involvement: When cancer affects or damages nerves, pain may feel burning, tingling, or shooting, and can persist even when the body is at rest.
Bone damage: Cancers that spread to bones can weaken them, leading to deep aching pain, tenderness, and discomfort during standing, walking, or simple daily movements.
Inflammation in tissues: Cancer can cause nearby tissues to become inflamed, leading to swelling, soreness, and pain that builds up over time.
Reduced mobility: Limited movement due to illness can cause muscle stiffness and joint pain, adding to overall discomfort and increasing pain during routine activities.

Key Symptoms of Cancer Pain
Chronic pain: Dull or throbbing pain is an ongoing type of discomfort that may become worse over time and can vary based on your daily level of activity.
Shooting pain/pinpoint pain: Sudden, sharp stabbing sensations that occur quickly and intermittently with movement, pressure, or postural changes are some of the most extreme forms of discomfort.
Burning or tingling pain: A nerve-related pain that can spread to other parts of the body (typically as burning, tingling, or an electrical shock) creates discomfort and can be a source for further pain.
Pain during movement: Pain may increase during walking, sitting, or changing position. In many cases, it can also continue during rest or sleep, making daily tasks harder to manage.
Increased sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to touch, pressure, and/or temperature on areas of the body that are affected by chronic debilitating conditions can create additional pain from all areas affected.

How does Medical Cannabis Work on it?
At our cancer therapy medical cannabis clinic in the UK, treatment focuses on how cannabis-based medicines interact with the body to reduce cancer pain and related symptoms under specialist care.
Interaction with the endocannabinoid system: Medical cannabis interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which regulates pain and inflammation. By supporting this system, treatment can help calm overactive pain signals commonly experienced by people living with cancer.
Reduction of pain signal transmission: The active compounds in cannabis, mainly THC and CBD, attach to CB1 receptors in the brain and spinal cord. This reduces the speed of pain signal transmission, making cancer-related pain feel less severe.
Anti-inflammatory effects: Cancer and cancer treatments often cause inflammation that worsens pain. CBD interacts with CB2 receptors, helping reduce inflammation around tumours or damaged tissues.
Enhanced response to other pain medications: Medical cannabis may improve how the body responds to opioids and other analgesics. This can allow lower doses of conventional painkillers, reducing side effects like nausea, constipation, or dependency.
Relief from related symptoms: Beyond direct pain control, cannabis helps with symptoms that increase pain perception, such as anxiety, insomnia, nausea, and muscle spasms, creating overall comfort and a better quality of life for cancer patients.
Apart from cancer pain, we also support patients with other long-term pain conditions, including CRPS, endometriosis, and care delivered through our Ehlers-Danlos syndrome medical cannabis clinic in the UK. Book a consultation to explore your treatment options with our clinical team today!
