The only things not included are extra appointments you choose to make with your consultant and team such as significant medication changes or pain psychologist appointments.

The NHS prescribes medication according to NICE guidelines, which looks at factors such as rigorous scientific evidence and economic impact. The MHRA approves medication in the UK when they pass all the right checks.

One reason for cannabis-based medication remains unlicensed is that because the type of extensive clinical trials required for a medication to become licensed are very expensive.

Given the complex nature of different cannabis strains impacting different symptoms and inability to protect intellectual property, the types of companies who can afford to conduct these expensive trials may not see return on their investment, meaning it remains unlicensed (for now).

Cannabis-based medication prescribed for chronic pain is 'unlicensed'. This means that the medication hasn't been approved or 'licensed' by the MHRA. See above for some of the reasons why.

While there are licensed cannabis-based medications that have undergone clinical trials, these are typically for specific applications and patient groups - like for specific, treatment-resistant epilepsy.

Since 2018 it's been legal for specialists on the GMC register to prescribe cannabis-based medication when other treatments have proven ineffective. Clinicians must follow the professional guide of the GMC such as discussing the possible benefits and harms so you have enough information to decide whether or not to have the treatment ('informed consent').

There is another category of medication called 'off-label', which you may be familiar with. This is when a licensed medication is prescribed for a different purpose than the one it's licensed for - for example gabapentin has historically been used off-label for chronic pain.

The monthly cost of medication will be based on your specific clinical needs, such as the level of pain you're experiencing and your previous medications. On average, patients spend around £150 per month at the pharmacy for their cannabis-based medication:

• Flower products range from £5 to £9.50 per gram.
